Fabric Samples For Fashion

So these are my final fabric samples for fashion. They are based on geometric forms taken from drawings in my sketchbook that have been modified on photoshop. The 2 techniques I have used are digital print and screen printing which I have combined to produce these unique prints for mens fashion. The colour scheme is very monochrome but with the use of embroidery using a luminous yellow thread will add a dash of colour.

Today I was...

Today I experimented with pull through's!
Never done this ever so it could have gone very badly, but that's the fun about experimenting. So I begun by making a pigment paste in the dye lab and pulling it through a clear silk screen with a squeegee onto paper, basically making a mess (mark making). After cleaning the screen I used procion dyes mixed with manutex paste applying the same process again but this time on to different types of cotton fabric.
The end result was a success! Mark making at its best...

CCAD's freshers fair

Had such a good day at CCAD's freshers fair! Sold some one off pieces that I'll be sad to see go but I'm sure they are going to good homes. Met some lovely people and made some new contacts, overall good experience. Here's my little stall...

Getting my craft on :)

Eventually getting round to doing something with all the fabric I printed on at university last term. 2x 12 by 12 cushions made from very thick up-cycled cotton curtains. I'll be selling them at the CCAD freshers fair in September at the Hartlepool campus, come along! :)

Travelling...

I've neglected you blog for a while now but I've been on my travels and seen some inspiring things...

Saturday 11 May 2013

Final painted collection

They work so well together, don't they? Whilst using the same colour palette I've used them in different ways, to create coordinating prints using stripes as the main focus.

Thursday 2 May 2013

Now on to my 2nd colour way. Keeping similar colours to my last but thinking of keeping a block colour background and incorporate the strips into the paint brush handles...

Yey!

1st final colour design done! Gone for a retro theme, very different from the industrial theme (but hey hoo)...

Colour ways...

So now I'm starting my colour ways. I'm going for retro inspired colours as I think these sit well with my type writer. I'm thinking about backgrounds and swaying towards strips...

Print, print, printing...

Design development...

So I've now completed my graph and my koda trace ready for printing, after Easter, yey!
Now it's time to experiment with colour. I've started picking a few colours in my sketchbook, I'm still keeping in mind my 'industrial' theme...

Part 2...

Starting the furnishing fabrics part of my project, changing my word to 'industrial'.
After drawing objects, such as; a typewriter, scissors, rulers, tape measures, bolts and screws etc.
I'm starting to pick the most successful and putting them in to repeat, this is my first attempt...

Getting there...

Finally think I'm getting somewhere with my first garment front...
Just needs some hand embroidery to finish it off and maybe small pieces of applique on the leaves.
* note to self : go back in the dye lab and experiment with painting dye on to fabric to hopefully get a water colour effect*

Heat transfer/dying

Today I have been experimenting with heat transfer inks and dying fabric to get different shades of gold. The heat transfer inks just look yellow which isn't what I was going for but could be used for applique. However I am happy with how the dyed sample turned out and I will be using it in my final samples. I have also been experimenting using screen wash to decorate my page.

Opulent sample #1

First final sample under way...
l'm finding, free hand machine embroidery on velvet time consuming. However I am enjoying it. The only thing to consider now is, how do I make it more opulent?
• machine cabling/couching areas with gold yarn
• embellish using gold beads/buttons and pearls
• attempt to dye gold fabric!

Crafty bits...

So I've found some odds and ends that would be great to use to embellish my garment fronts. Tomorrow will be a good day excited to get started embroidering!

Dying fabric

So I've been dying a range of fabric (mainly silks, cottons and velvet).
At the start of the design development process red was always the colour I wanted to use for my base colour. It was the fabric which I had to really think about. After making a cold dye bath using 1 x heaped tspoon of  DS acid rubine red dye and 3 x tspoon of ammonium sulphate, I decided the velvet sample was the most opulent. So there it is, velvet will be my base fabric.
I'm lacking inspiration at the moment well inspired by everything apart from uni, flowers and typewriters can be opulent, right?...

Friday 8 February 2013

Opulent inspiration.

My third university project is well under way. Opulent is my theme, tricky considering my drawing style is simple yet slightly  graphic . I'm thinking the way forward is to use jewel colours, deep purple, red and gold perhaps? Also heavy gold embellishment and embroidery .
Some opulent inspiration from a simple search on pinterest to get me started...

Samples

Since September 2012 I have achieved so much in a very short space of time. This is my first year of university, competed two projects and received high grades for both. To my surprise 5 of my design samples have been chosen to go to Indigo Trade show in Paris! how very exciting. To say I am proud is an understatement.

So these are the 5, sad to see them go considering they took hours to make. Bye Bye hope you go to good home or company :)
