Professional Studies. Week 2 - Careers and Report Topics. 1/10/2013

So for the time being I will be posting my work that I will be doing during my Professional Studies lectures...

So here it goes, Week 2 - Careers and Report Topics.

Report should be based on a chosen aspect of the appropriate creative industry...

This is an easy one for me, I love gift design! I think I will look at the gift industry on the high street, starting easily and keeping it simple I will start looking at Paperchase and Hallmark.

Of course the report needs to meet all the learning outcomes!

Possible careers to focus on...

The Textiles degree I'm doing can give me so many opportunities and take me on many paths. Whether I go into styling or self employment I can also make textiles relevant in my career. So far, when I graduate I want to become a gift designer. I'm not sure yet whether I want to work for a company in a studio or do freelance work but that I can figure out at a later date.

Demonstrate my understanding of...
  • The selected career: Gift Designer
  • How would I enter that career? Organise work experience placements with gift design companies, hopefully build up some contacts and get my foot in the door for when I graduate.
  • Knowledge of the industry? Research job roles and the skills required for the gift design industry before I start applying for jobs so I can be prepared for interview.
  • Primary research? Go out and look in high street shops that specialise in gift to get a better understanding of current trends, target market etc.
  • Pros and cons of the job? Working alone could possibly get lonely :( Working in a studio you are constantly motivated by peers! :) Gift is lovely! :)
work sheet I filled in during the lecture; part of a group discussion about the different careers in the textiles industry.
Where could I look for creative jobs?

Designer makers of interest...

Simply love how these hats are pushing the boundaries! These aren't your traditional wedding hats, love the odd and geometric shapes and textures that these designers have created.
