Design companies use: trend books/predictions/journals. They will use these to help them design collections as they don't have the time to go out and collect inspiration and create their own concepts.
Trend prediction companies use Pantone Colours in their trend books. This allows designers to use the colours straight from the trend books in to their designs, the work is practically done for them.
Trend companies use trend spotters to research world wide for potential trends.They can be influenced by almost anything from fashion, culture or even music.
High street trends are often the same, this is because all of them have used the same trend books/companies as each other. This doesn't just apply to fashion but to gift and interiors too.
As a designer I am able to decide for myself to follow trends or not. However the high street will base their designs around trends. Freelance designers on the other hand could work from their own influences/inspirations. There is no right or wrong way, being creative is the important thing.
TASK: Research a minimum of two trend companies.
