Professional Studies. Week 3 - Subject Specific and Costing. 8/10/13

So this is week 3 of Professional Studies and today we talked about subject specific areas and costing...

There are 4 main areas in the textiles industry, which are: Interiors, Gift, Fashion and Designer Makers...

Interiors include: wallpapers, furnishing fabrics, cushions and bedding etc...
Gift: cards, tags, wrap, boxes, stationary etc...
Fashion: menswear, womenswear, kidswear, sportswear etc...
Designer Makers: make/design handmade products which they sell through their own name/company.

During today's lecture we were given some very useful websites and company names. These are some I found the most useful:
  • missprint.co.uk
  • minimoderns.com
  • printpattern.blogspot
  • papercrave.com
  • preen.eu
  • jonathan-saunders.com
  • vandashop.com
  • tentlondon.co.uk
  • Abigail Brown
  • Donna Wilson
Pricing work can be difficult and each textiles area is different. Research is definitely needed before considering work of your own. The main thing to remember is collections should contain 4+ designs and never sell the same design twice. This is copy right!

Other factors to consider are:
  • Wholesale price is what a designer would receive from a shop/gallery for example...
  • Retail price is what the shop/gallery will sell on to their customers for example...
  • Marketing is very important for any business, textiles or not. This could be done through social media or websites or even magazines/newspapers.
When selling work you need to produce an invoice and set up a contract between you and a company. Either of you can do this! Its really important it keeps everything legal and simple, everyone involved will know exactly what they need to do and stick to the time scale given.
TASK:
  • Research creative business paperwork
  • Update blogger
