Professional Studies. Week 8 - Copyright and Intellectual Property. 12/11/13

Copyright - you cannot own an 'idea' but you can own the documentation. They do not last forever but you can sell/buy them from others.

Designer makers sell prints to companies, this now belongs to the company who bought it and therefore the designer cannot use this design again.

Ways in which I can protect myself?
  • Place photographs of designs on a CD and post them to myself. When I receive them in the post, don't open them. The envelop will be stamped with the date it was posted on. If in the future copyright was a problem you can open it with a solicitor to prove you where the first person to design these.
  • Use the 'copyright' symbol on the back of my work and name and date it.
